Dear faculty, researchers, staff, students, alumni and friends of CEM,
May I take this opportunity to inform you about interesting happenings at the College of Economics and Management. We have all been busy working on a number of curricular proposals; packaging and implementation of research projects; offering training programs and short courses; providing technical assistance to government agencies, private businesses and NGOs; attending to our students and other clients; and planning for infrastructure development of the College.
Our faculty worked so hard to revise our three BS programs, now up for final approval --- Agricultural and Applied Economics, Economics, and Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship –-- in line with the K-12 program for primary and secondary education, outcomes-based education (OBE), ASEAN University Network (AUN) accreditation system, new developments in the disciplines, and feedback from alumni on how to strengthen these programs. Recent researches are on value chain analysis, impact assessment (ex-ante and ex-post), market development, green cooperatives, food security and safety, renewable energy, environmental economics and natural resources management, among others. To enhance scientific productivity, disseminate research outputs, and sustain a positive research culture, CEM publishes the bi-annual Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development (JEMAD). We invite you to send publishable materials for this journal.
In order to reach the general public and enhance awareness on economics and management issues that matter to everyday life, CEM also publishes a one-pager technical bulletin Economics and Management Matters with 5-10 issues per month. These are also being compiled as book with volume 1 already published as Economics and Management Briefs. The CEM Newsletter is also regularly published to update everyone on CEM’s activities. While hard copies are distributed, all these are available online in our website.
We continue to strengthen our links with CEM and UPLB alumni through the CEM Alumni Foundation Inc. (CEMAFI) on collaborative activities like regional forums, regular meetings, policy advocacy, and research and training projects. In line with the internationalization thrust of UPLB, the college holds national and international conferences; the latest ones are on Energy (EnerCon), Cooperative Enterprises (ICOOP), and Global Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (GAME); there is an upcoming International Conference on Food and Agriculture (ICFA 2016) in November. We urge you to attend this conference as we envision this also as a gathering and reunion of CEM alumni and friends.
On July 26-27, 2016, we celebrated our 38th CEM Foundation Day as a college, but we take pride in the fact that we are technically a 97-year old academic institution since we started as Department of Rural Economics in 1919. During the event, we highlighted CEM’s and UP’s public service role in nation-building, shared our knowledge products, gave tribute to President Pascual as One UP President and for his role in the Master of Management program, and led the groundbreaking ceremony to signal the process of design and construction of two 4-storey modern buildings of CEM with budget of PhP 190 million. It was a memorable occasion with President Pascual, Chancellor Sanchez, other UPLB officials, deans of the various colleges, faculty, students, researchers, staff, alumni and friends.
We will continue to keep in touch and sustain our collaboration with you. We hope to receive feedback and hear from you; your suggestions and support are very much welcome.
