Objectives of the Program

The BS Agricultural and Applied Economics program aims to produce students who: (1) have technical background in agriculture and related sciences, (2) have understanding of the economic theories and tools in analyzing issues and problems in the agriculture and related sectors, and (3) are able to provide insights on policies and strategies relating to sustainable agricultural and rural development.

Fields of Specialization

a. Production Economics and Farm Management

The field of Production Economics and Farm Management provides the students with the theories and tools in analyzing problems pertaining to productivity and economic efficiency on agricultural production sector in relation to natural resource use, the environment, and agricultural policy and development.

b. Agricultural Marketing and Prices

The field of Agricultural Marketing and Prices provides the students with the theories and tools in analyzing problems pertaining to the movement of agricultural commodities from the point of production to the point of consumption. It involves the analysis of prices, logistics, value addition, and costs in every segment of agricultural and food supply chains.

c. Rural Finance and Cooperatives

The field of Rural Finance and Cooperatives provides the students with theories and tools in analyzing the behavior of providers and users of financial products and services, which can be used to improve the economic well-being of stakeholders in the rural sector.

d. Natural Resource Economics

The field of Natural Resource Economics will enable the students to understand issues and concerns relating to the use and management of natural resources. This field focuses on the analysis of optimal uses of land, water, fossil fuels and mineral, forestry, and fishery resources. In addition, this field will orient the students on the fundamentals and policy aspects of natural resource use.

e. Food and Nutrition Economics

The field of Food and Nutrition Economics provides the students with theories and tools important for an integrative analysis and understanding of the issues relating to food availability, accessibility, and utilization. Furthermore, this specialization will address concerns regarding the stability of food and nutrition status (vulnerability and resilience) of households and communities.
