The University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) celebrates the International Year of Cooperatives by hosting the International Conference on Cooperative Enterprises on November 8-10, 2012. UPLB is a pioneer and premier university in Asia that hosts a number of international institutions, among them the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) and the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity. UPLB also has its Institute of Cooperatives and Bio-Enterprise Development (ICOPED) dedicated to teaching, research, extension and development of cooperatives and is the lead unit in the Conference. ICOPED is part of the College of Economics and Management that also houses the Departments of Economics, Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management, as well as the recently proposed Rural Economic Development and Renewable Energy Center (REDREC). The College offers graduate and undergraduate academic programs for both local and international students.
The theme of the conference is "Cooperative Enterprises: Key to Economic and Social Progress". The conference will feature keynote speeches, scientific papers and testimonials on the different breakthroughs and significant experiences in cooperative promotion and development. Papers will be presented in the focal areas of (1) cooperative education, (2) cooperative enterprise development, (3) cooperative finance, (4) ICT/database management for cooperatives, (5) women and youth in cooperatives, and (6) role of cooperatives in environmental sustainability.
Registration in the conference will cost 3,900 Philippine Pesos (for local participants) or US$ 150 (for foreign participants). The fee will cover attendance to all plenary sessions and a chosen parallel session, conference kit, welcome dinner on November 8 and full meals including fellowship night for November 9, 2012.
The conference venue (UPLB) is 65 kilometers from Manila and accessible in 2 hours from the Manila International Airport (Ninoy Aquino International Airport). Participants are expected to arrive in UPLB starting 1:00 PM on November 8, 2012. Transfer service from the airport will be arranged for all participants.
Accommodations are available and can be booked directly: SEARCA Guesthouse (Facilities, Rates) is within the campus and there are hotels nearby such as Anest Hotel (Phone 6349 536 0065) and Trace Suites (Phone 6349 536 1780). Participants are advised to book for November 8-9, 2012 (two nights), with check-in on November 8, 2012 and check-out on November 10, 2012 (departure). Tours and sightseeing for November 10 will be arranged for interested participants and charged separately.
