As part of the CEM Seminar Series, the College of Economics and Management (CEM) in cooperation with the University of the Philippines Los Baños CEM Alumni Foundation, Inc. (UPLB-CEMAFI) hosted a seminar on energy last 23 February 2018 at the ICOPED auditorium, CEM, UPLB. The lecture on “Philippine Power Sector: Structure, Actors and, Prospects for Sustainable Energy” was given by Mr. Guido Alfredo A. Delgado, an alumnus of CEM. He discussed the basics of the energy sector in the country and the processes involved in energy generation, transmission, and distribution. The determinants of the energy costs and prices were explained. Since investing on energy market requires a very large sum of money, prices of electricity in the Philippines are relatively high. He emphasized that, given the current industry structure, one of the challenges in the energy sector is its sustainability.

This lecture on energy is the first in the seminar series to be conducted this year. A total of sixty-seven (67) faculty, researchers, and students attended the seminar. This discussion is very timely since the college is developing energy economics as a field of specialization and pursuing collaborative work on sustainable energy systems as part of its academic and research agenda. CEM encourages faculty, students and researchers to conduct more energy-related studies.
