ICOPED held a Consultation Workshop on Developing a Business Continuity (BCP) Course for Cooperatives

ICOPED organized and hosted a consultation workshop on December 7, 2020, to solicit insights and suggestions from professionals and practitioners. The workshop aimed to develop a responsive and relevant business continuity plan (BCP) course for cooperatives.

The workshop started with opening remarks from Dr. Agham C. Cuevas, the Dean of the College of Economics and Management (CEM). This was followed by presentations from faculty members from ICOPED. Asst. Prof. Ceptryl S. Mina discussed the risks, hazards, and contingency plans undertaken by cooperatives in CALABARZON while Asst. Prof. Maria Theresa B. Castro-Bernardo shared the content and modes of delivery of BCP courses being offered in the country and abroad. The workshop proper followed where participants shared their experiences and insights on the content, delivery, risk/ hazards and corresponding strategies for business continuity, and suggestions on how to encourage adoption of BCP and participation in BCP training. Lastly, Dr. Salvador P. Catelo, the director of ICOPED, made a synthesis of the main points discussed by all participants.

Fifteen (15) experts and practitioners from different sectors participated in the said event. There were 3 from the academe, 2 from the government, 9 from the cooperative, and 1 from the private sector. Prof. Faustino Q. Arrienda II and Prof. Melodee Marciana E. De Castro from the Department of Agribusiness Management and Entrepreneurship (DAME-CEM, UPLB) and Dr. Bienvenido P. Nito from Center for Research and Communication of University of Asia and the Pacific (CRC-UA&P) represented the academe. Representing the government sector were Ms. Ivyrene Rose Q. Panalglima and Mr. Ismael F. Fampula from the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) Region IV-A. From the private sector, Mr. Daniel Antonio S. Remo of 1Export also shared business continuity practices from his organization.

Leaders, officers, CEOs, and members of the board of directors of cooperative federations and primary cooperatives representing various cooperative types, sizes, and locations also joined the event. They were (1) Mr. Abdulrahman D. Andie from Kidapawan City Division Office Teachers Retirees Employees MPC (KCDOTREMCO) in Cotabato; (2) Mr. Magdaleno T. Bargamento from First Consolidated Cooperative Along Tanon Seaboards in Cebu; (3) Ms. Fely D. Bayona from Western Visayas Cacao Agriculture Cooperative in Iloilo; (4) Mr. Bon Ian D. de la Roca from Sorosoro Ibaba Development Cooperative in Batangas; (5) Mr. Zaldy M. Geroy from Binalbagan Multipurpose Cooperative in Negros Occidental; (6) Ms. Donna Grace S. Maglanoc from National Confederation of Cooperatives; (7) Ms. Christie Rowena C. Plantilla from Federation of People’s Sustainable Development Cooperatives; (8) Mr. Eduardo A. Saraida from Bukluran Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Cavite; and (9) Ms. Samantha O. Subida from Federation of People’s Sustainable Development Cooperatives.

The consultation workshop was moderated by Asst. Prof. Liezel S. Cruz from ICOPED.
