UPLB Department of Economics, REDREPP collaborates with AboitizPower on crafting an economics training program on the power sector

The UPLB Department of Economics (DE) energy economics committee and the Rural Economic Development and Renewable Energy Policy Program (REDREPP) of the College of Economics and Management (CEM), UPLB organized a training session with AboitizPower on the power sector.

AboitizPower conducted Power 101, the company’s training course on the power sector. Power 101 was attended by CEM faculty members from DE and the REDREPP committee, and covered the following topics: the structure of the Philippine power sector, the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), the renewable energy situation in the Philippines, performance-based regulation, and the economics of the power
sector.

The whole day training also served as a discussion for improving the materials and working towards a collaboration between DE, CEM, and AboitizPower to carry out training for stakeholders of the power sector and be recognized by pertinent government institutions.

DE and REDREPP meanwhile agreed to provide AboitizPower with versions of Power 101 modules that incorporate basic economic theory with applications to the power sector. This program is also intended to be more understandable and relatable for relevant stakeholders, such as policymakers, industry players, academic research staff, and an eventual training and certification program focusing on the power sector. The collaboration is envisioned to mainstream the power sector, both in the academe, the industry, government, and related stakeholders.
